Anatomy of a Stompbox

How a guitar pedal is wired end-to-end: signal path, 9 V power, virtual ground, true bypass with a 3PDT, and ground discipline that keeps it quiet.

Open one up and it's all the same six things

Pop the back off any boutique pedal — Klon, Big Muff, your friend's $400 boutique fuzz — and you'll find the same six building blocks staring back at you. There's a jack to get signal in, a jack to send it out, a footswitch in the middle, a circuit board doing the actual work, a power input, and some pots on top so you can dial it in.

Once you can see those six things and how they're wired together, every pedal schematic on the internet stops looking like a wall of squiggles. So that's what this page is for.

The signal path, in order

Signal flows in roughly a straight line from input jack to output jack:

  • Input jack → coupling cap (blocks any DC riding on your guitar cable)
  • Input buffer or first gain stage
  • Gain / clipping / tone shaping — the part that gives the pedal its personality
  • Output volume pot
  • 3PDT footswitch (decides whether the audience hears the circuit or a clean bypass)
  • Output jack → next pedal or amp

If you ever get lost reading a schematic, trace it left to right in that order. The fancy stuff is always in the middle; the edges are boring on purpose.

Power: 9 V, center-negative, and why

Boss decided in the late 70s that pedals would run on 9 V center-negative DC, and everyone else just… went along with it. Center-negative means the tip of the barrel jack is ground and the sleeve is +9 V — backwards from most consumer electronics, which is exactly why you blow up a pedal the first time you reach for the wrong wall wart.

Inside the pedal, the first thing the 9 V hits is a reverse-polarity protection diode (usually a 1N5817 in series, or a 1N4001 across the rail). After that, a 100 µF cap smooths the rail and a Vref divider — two equal resistors plus a smoothing cap — generates a half-supply 'virtual ground' so op-amps can swing both ways from a single supply.

True bypass and the 3PDT switch

True bypass means: when the pedal is 'off,' the input jack is wired directly to the output jack and the circuit is completely out of the signal path. The part that does the switching is a 3PDT (three-pole double-throw) footswitch — three little internal switches that flip together every time you stomp.

One pole routes audio: either through the circuit or straight to the output. A second pole grounds the circuit's input when bypassed (kills 'pop' and bleed). The third pole lights up the LED. If a build is popping on switch-on, 99% of the time the input-grounding pole is wired wrong.

Ground discipline (the boring part that makes it quiet)

Hum is almost always a grounding problem. The rule that fixes 90% of it: every ground in the pedal — circuit ground, jack sleeves, pot bodies, switch — meets at one single point near the DC jack. That's the 'star ground.'

The enclosure itself should only touch ground at one place too (usually the sleeve of the input jack). If both jacks bolt the enclosure to ground, you've made a ground loop the size of the box, and you'll hear it.

Read a real one in Pedal Bench
